Peacocks & Puppies
The two resident Peacocks continue to provide us with a lot of pleasure. Unlike their father
(who now lives elsewhere) they confine their cries (which some find eerily beautiful) to daylight
hours, and unlike their mother (who was run over) they are well localised to the garden.
They accept with stoic fortitude anything our weather can throw at them; on the other hand, we
sometimes catch them lying on their sides, sunbathing.
Despite what people say, they do almost no damage to our plants. Spoilt for choice?
When Lucy Waterspaniel died late in 2002 we were all devastated, not least Mattie her stepsister. We decided
(for Mattie's sake of course) to re-stock with two puppies from the same breeder. At first, Mattie would not look at them and
there was much deep growling. But in a couple of months they were the best of friends; Millie and Molly have
grown out of all recognition, Mattie has forgotten her grief and is transformed back to her old self, and we love the
young dogs dearly.
